Browse Windows

By double-clicking on the data source in the Control window (or by using the Browse command in the menu) a browse window will be opened. Such window is similar to the standard Windows Explorer and is used for the same tasks.

The user can browse the directories, move, copy or delete files, change file attributes etc. The layout of the browse windows can slightly differ depending on the data source type (e.g. FTP browse windows contain some additional panes). The data source pane in the Control window is updated immediately after the browse window creation. A new icon, representing the currently created data source instance, appears as a sub-node in the tree directly under the data source icon. The user can instantly see all existing browse windows opened for the respective data source and make any of them active by a mouse click or by opening a new one. The simultaneous opening of two data sources in one browse window (which is the default behaviour of all FTP data sources after the software installation) is a very useful option as well. In the left pane the user can see the directory structure of the FTP server while the directories of the local machine ( "My Computer" ) appear in the right pane. This simplifies the "drag & drop" and clipboard operations by file transfers and offers a better overview of the files the user currently works with. To control the appearance of an additional data source in the browse window, the data source properties in the Control window can be used.

The single browse window can consist of following panes:

File Tree

This pane works exactly the same way as in the Windows Explorer. Users quickly find files and get the best possible overview about the directory structure.

File List

This pane is similar to a Windows Explorer layout as well. The files from the current directory are listed here. The menu can be used to adjust the appearance of the file attribute columns.

This pane can consist from up to three sub-panes (depending on the data source type):

Details - Connections

This pane appears by data sources supporting multiple simultaneous connections (currently all except "My Computer"). Each row represents a separate thread handling a network connection to the server. You can see the connection status, transfer speed, info about the currently processed request, error status etc. The number of connections can be set in the appropriate properties dialog. There is also a simple context menu (displayed via right mouse click) allowing control of the connection state, or the ability to send a custom command to the server (FTP data sources only).

Details - Protocol Log

This pane provides protocol-specific information about each connection in a network-based data source. Listed here is everything that was sent to the server, as well as received data. This is useful especially for experienced users and can help to find the cause of eventual communication problems between the client (BitKinex) and server. The context menu described above is also available in this window.

Details - Subrequests

All types of browse windows feature this pane. Each row in the list represents a single request generated by the user or by the application self. For example, when the user browses through the server directories, scan requests are automatically generated and queued in this request list. The data source instance (represented by the browse window) processes these requests one by one to obtain the data needed to display the file list. Use this pane to verify the proper registration of your requests.

Menu items description:

• File
  • Open - Opens the selected file using an application associated with the file class. Files on remote servers are downloaded first (with the ability to resume the operation on program restart). This command is equivalent to double-clicking the file with the left mouse button.
  • Open With ... - Opens the selected file(s) using an arbitrary application.
  • Edit - Opens the selected file(s) for editing using an application associated with the file class. Files on remote servers are downloaded first (with the ability to resume the operation on program restart). The user has to resume the request processing as soon as he wishes to upload the changes back to the server (unless the automatic resumption is not used). This can be done by clicking on the traffic light symbol in the request pane.
  • Edit With ... - Opens the selected file(s) for editing using an arbitrary application.
  • View - Opens the selected file for editing using an application associated with the file class. Files on remote servers are downloaded first (with the ability to resume the operation on program restart).
  • View With ... - Displays the selected file(s) using an arbitrary application.
  • Print - Prints the selected file. Files on remote servers are downloaded first (with the ability to resume the operation on program restart).
  • New Directory - Creates a new directory. The user will be prompted to specify the directory name.
  • New File - Creates an empty file. The user will be prompted to specify the file name and the file will be opened for editing automatically.
  • Delete - Deletes the selected files and/or directories.
  • Rename - Renames the file or directory. The user will be prompted to specify the new name.
  • Refresh - Refreshes the content of the selected directory.
  • Refresh All - Refreshes the content of all window panes of the browse window.
  • Lock - Locks the selected files and/or directories (WebDAV only).
  • Unlock - Unlocks the selected files and/or directories (WebDAV only).
  • Properties - Displays the file attributes. Depending on the data source type users can also set/remove selected attributes.
  • Home directory - Switches to the user's home directory.
  • Parent directory - Switches to the parent directory. Selecting this item is equivalent to double-clicking the ".." directory in the file list.
  • Change directory - Allows a manual specification of the directory currently displayed in the window.
  • Close - Closes the browser.
• Edit
  • Undo - Undoes the last clipboard operation (if possible).
  • Cut - Cuts the selected text and stores it in the clipboard.
  • Copy - Copies the selected text, file or directory to the clipboard.
  • Paste - Pastes the clipboard content to the cursor location or to the current directory.
  • Extended Paste - "Extended paste" allows users to schedule the copy/move operation to the future and/or to set additional parameters (e.g. mirroring).
  • Select all - Selects the whole text in the edit box or all files in the current directory.
  • Revert Selection - Reverts the selection of files in the current directory.
  • Copy Current Path - Stores the current path in the clipboard. It can be pasted into a document or edit box just like any other text string.
  • Find (in this pane) - The user can use this menu item to search for a text string in the active pane.
  • Find Next - This menu item can be used to search for the next occurrence of the specified text string.
• Data source
  • Find in Control Window - Selects the corresponding item in the data source pane. This helps to find the data source in the hierarchy.
  • Set as default dir. - The directory currently selected in the browser will be stored in the data source properties. BitKinex automatically switches to this directory the next time the browse window will be opened.
  • Properties - Selecting this item has the same effect as choosing the "properties" menu item in the data source pane. Users can change the properties of the data source here.
• Tools
  • Find Files - Use this menu item whenever you want to search for files on the data source.
  • Compare Files - This menu item can be used to compare the content of files and directories on the data source.
  • Convert File Names - With help of this command you can change the names of selected files and directories.
  • Replace in Files - This command allows users to replace a string in the selected file(s).
  • Calculate Hash - This command computes the CRC32, MD5 or SHA1 hash of the selected file(s).
  • Extended Requests - Use these menu items to create requests with additional parameters.
  • Custom Requests - Use these menu items to start and manage custom requests.
• Bookmarks
  • Add Current Directory - Adds the current directory to the list of bookmarks.
  • Edit Bookmarks - Use this menu item to edit the list of bookmarks defined for this data source.
• View
  • Toolbar - Shows or hides the toolbar.
  • Status Bar - Shows or hides the status bar.
  • Transfer Bar - Shows or hides the transfer bar which separates the data sources displayed in this window.
  • Application Log - Shows or hides the current log file.
  • Always on Top - When checked, the Control window stays above all other windows.
  • Transparency - Opens a dialog with transparency settings valid for this window.
  • Filter - Allows to specify a rule for the display of files and directories available on this data source.
  • Next pane - Sets the focus to the next pane.
  • Prev. pane - Sets the focus to the previous pane.
  • List view - Controls the appearance of the file list pane.
    • Large icons, small icons, list, details - Select the style of the file list pane.
    • Columns - Allows users to choose the columns displayed in the file list pane.
  • Tree - Shows or hides the file tree pane.
  • List - Shows or hides the file list pane.
  • Details - Shows or hides the details pane.
• Help
  • Contents - Displays the table of contents for the documentation.
  • Index - Displays the Index to the documentation.
  • Search - Searches the documentation.
  • BitKinex Website - Opens the official BitKinex web site in the browser.
  • Submit a Bug - Allows users to send a bug report to the development team.
  • Online Support - Use this menu item to request a support.
  • Purchase BitKinex - Use this menu item to purchase BitKinex and obtain a serial number.
  • Serial Number - Enter/view a serial number here.
  • About BitKinex ... - Displays the basic information about the application.
