The layout of your browse windows can be easily adjusted by changing the layout properties of the data source. Just right-click the server icon in the small control window and switch to "Data Source -> Layout". On that property page you can precisely specify how the browse window should be organized. In your case you will probably have to uncheck the "Inherit properties ..." checkbox and select "My Computer" in the "Open in One Window With ..." combobox together with "Position on the browse window" set to "left pane".
